When you think of Nutella, you think ‘hazelnut+cocoa’, but when you look at the ingredients a typical jar is made up of only 13% hazelnuts! In fact, the first 2 ingredients are sugar and oil! That’s not to say you cannot enjoy it from time to time as part of a balanced diet, but if you want to eat it on a daily basis, why not make you own healthy version that tastes equally as good!
If you’re familiar with the concept of overnight oats, buckwheat porridge is similar but with a slight twist. Buckwheat is one of those ingredients that not may people are familiar with, outside the health community of course! You can now easily get hold of buckwheat as it’s available in most supermarkets and online. I’ve also noticed more and more brands adding it to their granola, muesli and snack bars.
Homemade almond milk is definitely way creamier and richer than the ones I’ve tried from the supermarket and the great thing about making your own is that you can make it as sweet as you like and add other flavours like cinnamon, vanilla and chocolate (like I’m doing in this recipe).
I filmed a short video showing you how to make healthy porridge – all you need is oats, some form of liquid and a pan! Typically when I make porridge I would add some cinnamon to flavour, a mashed banana, some dried fruit (dates and raisins are my favourote!) for some natural sweetness and some nuts, seeds or nut butter for some healthy fats and a bit of crunch. To top it off, i like to add some fresh fruit, berries and whatever else I fancy on that particular day.
This smoothie tastes so so good, kind of like a chocolate milkshake! But all the ingredients will nourish and feed your body. The healthy carbs (from the banana) and protein (from the added protein powder) make it an excellent breakfast or post-workout meal.
This banana blueberry baked oatmeal is vegan, dairy free and can easily be made gluten free. You could add some protein powder, nuts or seeds to make it a more well rounded breakfast.
You probably all know by now that I’m a massive fan of overnight oats (also known as Bircher Muesli) because of how convenient and easy it is to make. Also because it tastes amazing…if you use the right flavour combination!
Making homemade granola is easier than you think. The best thing about making your own granola is that you can customise it to your personal taste. If you like it sweet, add more sweetener. If you don’t like raisins, leave them out! The second best thing is that you can avoid all those added calories, processed sugars and other unnecessary ingredients! It’s a nice feeling knowing exactly what’s going into your body and that it’s actually doing you some good!
Since the weather is fast becoming colder here in the UK, I’m slowly turning away from my beloved overnight oats and towards more warm and comforting breakfasts. Oatmeal/porridge is always a good breakfast option for those cold, gloomy mornings. But what if you don’t even have time to prepare that?
It’s no secret that I’m a massive fan of overnight oats. It’s just so convenient, tasty and filling. Whenever someone says to me “I don’t have time for breakfast” or “I’m too rushed to make a healthy breakfast” I always advise them to make overnight oats.
