Vegan Tofu Chocolate Mousse

Here’s yet another recipe involving tofu. Yep, I seem to be in a tofu frenzy at the moment! It’s just such a versatile ingredient and you can use it in so many different ways and to create so many amazing recipes, like this right here – chocolate tofu mousse that’s so light and fluffy – perfect as a light after dinner treat. 

This vegan tofu chocolate mousse is also gluten free, dairy free and refined sugar free. It literally takes a few minutes to make. The only thing it involves is melting some (good quality) dark chocolate and whizzing it up with the tofu, then pouring it into glasses/ramekins. The only frustrating part is then waiting for it to set! 

This recipe only calls for only 3 main ingredients – tofu, dark chocolate and maple syrup! The darker the chocolate you use the more intense your mousse will taste. Make sure to choose a chocolate that you like the taste of, as it will be the main flavour of this mousse. A light and healthy dessert that’s still quite rich!

Tofu is relatively low in calories, which makes this mousse a lighter dessert option when you’re craving a chocolate mousse or something chocolatey and sweet. It makes a great post dinner dessert for yourself, but also if you’re trying to impress friends and family at your next dinner party. 

Tofu is also a rich source of essential amino acids as well as some minerals like iron, calcium, and magnesium. The dark chocolate adds lots of antioxidants which are great for our healthy in many ways. 

Preparing a conventional mousse recipe can be a bit of a faff. From beating cream to stiff peaks, to making sure the chocolate isn’t too hot that it cooks the egg yolks. There a lot that can go wrong in the process. This vegan tofu chocolate mousse is easy and fool proof. Not to mention also having to wait at least 6 hours for it to set! All I did to make this vegan tofu chocolate mousse was melt chocolate in the microwave, then add it to a food processor and blend. Once smooth, I transferred it into serving dishes and it’s ready to enjoy! Instant silky smooth chocolate mousse with none of the faff or waiting around. 

What you need to make this vegan tofu chocolate mousse:

Tofu – I use silken tofu for a creamier mousse, but also it has a much milder taste compared to other tofu types. You can find silken tofu in the international isle in all major supermarkets. 

Chocolate – Use good quality dark chocolate (70% cocoa solids or above), but also make sure you use a chocolate that you like the taste of since this will be the dominant taste of the mousse. 

Maple syrup – I add a little maple syrup for extra sweetness. You can add as much or as little as you like. I would recommend tasting the mousse before serving so you can adjust the sweetness to your liking. 

Optional – you can add a pinch of salt to help enhance the flavours if you like.

How to prepare this vegan tofu chocolate mousse:

  • Break up the chocolate into a heat-proof bowl and melt in the microwave, stirring every few seconds to make sure the chocolate doesn’t burn.
  • To a food processor, add the tofu, melted chocolate, maple syrup and and optional pinch of salt. Blend until smooth. 
  • Transfer into serving glasses or ramekins and serve!
  • I topped mine with more melted chocolate and Biscoff spread, but you can top yours with whatever you want!

How to store your vegan tofu chocolate mousse:

If you have any leftovers, cover the top with clingfilm and store in the fridge for up to 3 days.

  • 2-3 tbsp maple syrup or to taste
