If you’re searching for a chocolate mug cake that’s easy, wholesome, and irresistibly chocolatey, this healthier version ticks every box. It’s quick to make, uses simple pantry staples, and satisfies both your sweet tooth and your nutritional goals.

Chocolate Mug Cake: A Healthier Indulgence in Minutes
If you’ve ever craved something sweet but didn’t want to bake an entire cake, you’re not alone. It’s times like this when a mug cake comes in handy – the ultimate quick fix for dessert lovers. A chocolate mug cake is exactly what it sounds like: a single-serving cake made right in a mug, cooked in the microwave in just a minute or two. It’s fast, fuss-free, and perfectly portioned for when you want a warm, gooey treat without the extra dishes or the temptation of leftovers.
But not all mug cakes are created equal. While many versions use refined flour, butter, and white sugar, there’s a way to make your mug cake both indulgent and nourishing. By using ingredients like oats, ground almonds, cocoa powder, almond butter and dark chocolate chips, you can create a rich, chocolatey dessert that feels decadent yet supports a healthier lifestyle.

Why I love making this chocolate mug cake:
There’s something undeniably satisfying about making a dessert that’s ready in the time it takes to brew a cup of tea. The process is simple and sensory – the smell of chocolate as it cooks, the steam rising as you dig in, and that first warm, gooey bite.
This chocolate mug cake gives you permission to enjoy dessert spontaneously. No waiting for cakes to bake or cool, no frosting required – just pure chocolatey comfort whenever you need it most.
It also leaves you with very little washing up to do. All you need is a mug (I prefer to use a ramekin) and a spoon. No bowls, spatulas or mixers to clean.
Using healthier ingredients to make this chocolate mug cake means I can satisfy my cravings while nourishing my body at the same time. That’s the best kind of dessert in my opinion!
Why you need to try this chocolate mug cake?
Quick and easy – You can make a chocolate mug cake from start to finish in under five minutes. No preheating, no mixing bowls, and no mess.
Perfect for one – Sometimes, you don’t want an entire cake sitting in your kitchen. A mug cake is just the right amount for one person (or two if you’re feeling generous).
Customisable – You can tweak your chocolate mug cake to fit your preferences — make it gluten-free, dairy-free, or extra rich with added dark chocolate chips.
Healthier – By choosing wholesome ingredients, you can enjoy dessert while still aligning with your health goals.
Satisfying – Even though we’re using more wholesome ingredients, this chocolate mug cake will still satisfy your sweet tooth, especially if you get regular cravings for chocolate like I do.

What you’ll need to make this chocolate mug cake:
Traditional mug cakes often use all-purpose flour, sugar, and butter, but swapping those for more nutrient-dense ingredients turns this quick dessert into something that nourishes as it satisfies:
Oats – Ground oats or oat flour provide fibre and a slow-releasing source of energy, helping you stay full longer.
Ground Almonds – Almond meal adds a subtly nutty flavour and healthy fats that contribute to a soft, moist texture.
Cocoa Powder – Rich in antioxidants, cocoa adds deep chocolate flavour without the need for excess sugar.
Almond Butter – Adds creaminess, richness, and healthy fats while eliminating the need for dairy butter.
Dark Chocolate Chips – A few high-quality dark chocolate chips melt into the cake, creating pockets of gooey, molten goodness.
Plant Milk – Whether it’s almond, oat, or soy milk, plant milk keeps the recipe dairy-free while adding a smooth texture.

Hello. I was wondering if you can bake it in the oven if I don’t have a microwave?
I haven’t tried it myself, but you should be able to bake it in a 180C/160C fan heated oven for 15 minutes 🙂
Yum! Thank you ??✊
?♥️
This looks amazing! Definitely making this for a snack (or breakfast!) soon!
Hope you enjoy it 😀

Hi if we don’t use microwave how long do we keep in oven
I haven’t tried it, but you should be able to bake it in a 180C/160C fan preheated oven for 15 minutes
For a non-gluten free version, can I use self-raising flour?
I haven’t tried it myself, but it should work! let me know how it turns out if you try it 🙂
I haven’t tried it myself, but it should work 🙂 Let me know if you try it!
I tried it for my son with whole wheat white flour (not self rising, still added baking powder), because he is allergic to oats – he liked the results very much 🙂 I did have to increase the liquid (milk) by one tablespoon though
Looks so delicious!
I don’t have a microwave though. Could this be done in the oven? How long should I leave it for?
Thank you Mariana 🙂 I haven’t tried it, but you should be able to bake it in a 180C/160C fan heated oven for 15 minutes. Let me know how it turns out!
If I don’t have grounded almond, ehat can I use?
You can use more oat flour 🙂
Thank you Mariana, this was quiet taste. A good amount of sweetness. I made it as is, except for the ground almonds (as I didn’t have any), and used ground flax seeds instead. I think I’ll try it with regular flour next time and peanut butter, yum!
Thank you Mary 🙂 glad you enjoyed it! And plain flour should work just as well.
Hi, can we replace ground almonds with something?
You can use more oat flour instead 🙂
I am so exited to try this today!
Hope you enjoyed it 😀
Wow im going to try this today
Super yummy!!
Hope you enjoy it 😀
This has become my go-to chocolate cake when that chocolate craving hits! I used to do it with pb but now I am making it with tahini, both great! Thank you for the recipe!
So glad you like it 😀 Love tahini and use it a lot when making this mug cake too 🙂
Baking powder is often used alongside with plain flour to make the cake rise but alternatively self raising flour is used instead of these two ingredients. I can see it’s gluten free, so if you want to make it non gluten, then self raising flour can work do you think?
Self raising flour should work just fine 🙂 Let me know how it goes!
Hi can I use coconut flour and peanut butter instead of Almond.
Coconut oil would work as a substitute for almond butter, but I’m not sure if coconut flour will work as I haven’t tried it myself. The texture may not be the same. Let me know how it turns out if you try it! 🙂
This is delicious!! Not overly sweet and a really nice soft texture. This mug cake is on the top of my list when a sweet craving hits!
So glad you enjoyed it Janet 😀
This is sooooo good!! I’ve made it several times and have subbed out the almond butter for coconut oil and it still works great. Perfect treat when you need something sweet!
So glad you enjoyed it Teresa 😀
