These berry chocolate bliss balls are so easy to put together and make a great snack on busy days or even a healthier dessert. A great source of healthy fats, protein and packed with antioxidants.
I love having snacks like these in my fridge or freezer for when I’m feeling peckish or want to grab something nutritious to take with me on the go. They make eating healthy so much easier, more enjoyable and less of a hassle.
What’s great about snacks like these berry chocolate bliss balls is that you only need a few basic ingredients to make them and very little time. I whipped these up in just 15 minutes. You literally just need to mix everything in a bowl, then shape into balls. That’s it!
What are bliss balls?
Bliss balls, in case you’ve never heard of them, are small, round snacks made from wholesome ingredients. They are popular for their convenience, nutritional benefits, and delicious taste.
Also known as energy balls, bliss balls are made up of things like nuts, dried-fruit, nut butters and oats. They’re also sometimes made with protein powder.
You will have probably come across them in health food shops, if so, you probably noticed they come with a hefty price tag! There’s really no need for you to buy them when you can make them at home with a few simple ingredients and under 15 minutes!
Why I love making these berry chocolate bliss balls:
As I’ve already mentioned, I find shop bought bliss balls/energy balls to be way too expensive, especially considering how easy they are to make at home. You only need 6 main ingredients to make these berry chocolate bliss balls and they come together in under 15 minutes! You’ll only need a bowl and a spoon to make them.
The other great thing about making your own bliss balls is that you have complete control over what goes into them. You won’t be using any binders or preservatives and I also think homemade versions taste so much better. I often find the shop bought ones to be on the drier side – not the most pleasant texture to eat.
I’m only using basic ingredients like cashew butter, oats, cocoa, coconut oil and maple syrup to make these berry chocolate bliss balls. You can of course change some of the ingredients around to fit your diet needs as well as preferences. For example, if you don’t have cashew butter, use peanut butter. Or if you’re allergic to nuts, use a seed butter instead like tahini.
You can also change the flavours around. Things like orange zest, desiccated coconut, cinnamon are all great flavour alternatives.
What you’ll need to make these berry chocolate bliss balls:
Cashew butter – I love using nut butters like peanut or hazelnut butter, but they have the tendency to overpower other flavours and therefore will only work with a handful of ingredients. Cashew butter is great in desserts because it has such a mild flavour that doesn’t overshadow other flavours.
Oat flour – Oats are great in general to make no-bake treats and snacks like these berry chocolate bliss balls. They’re a great source of fibre and have a low glycemic index, meaning they won’t spike your blood sugar. That coupled with the cashew butter and coconut oil make these berry chocolate bliss balls a great snack when you need sustained energy that will keep you going until your next meal.
Cocoa powder – Packs in lots of antioxidants and is of course essential to achieve the rich chocolate flavour.
Maple syrup – We need some sort of sweetener, and liquid sweeteners work best in recipes like this one. As well as adding sweetness, it also acts as a binder or a glue to hold everything together. You can use other liquid sweeteners like honey, rice syrup, agave, etc.
Coconut oil – a little goes a long way in helping to shape and mould into balls. The amount you’ll need will depend on how thick your cashew butter is. The runnier the butter, the less coconut oil you’ll need. I would suggest adding the coconut oil at the end once you have a better idea of how well the mixture will come together. If it’s a bit dry, start of by adding 1 tbsp of coconut oil and add more only if needed.
How to make your berry chocolate bliss balls:
-
In a bowl, mix the cashew butter, maple syrup and 1 tbsp coconut oil.
-
Add the oat flour, cocoa powder, greens powder and a pinch of salt. Mix to combine.
- If the mixture is still a little dry, add another 1 tbsp of coconut oil.
-
Form into balls. You have the option to coat them in freeze dried raspberries, but they taste amazing without!
How to store these berry chocolate bliss balls:
Store in an air-tight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
You can also freeze them – place on a baking sheet lined with baking paper and freeze for an hour. Once frozen, transfer into a freezer-safe bag or container for up to 3 months.
