These healthy cinnamon rolls are a lighter version of the much loved classic. The dough is a simple mixture of flour and Greek yoghurt and the centre is sweetened only with whole dates. Packed with flavour, but with less sugar, saturated fats and more protein!

Healthy Cinnamon Rolls

There’s a reason cinnamon rolls hold such a cherished place in the world of baked goods. They’re warm, soft, fragrant, and deeply comforting – like a hug in pastry form. But traditional cinnamon rolls also tend to be heavy, rich, and intensely sweet, often leaving me feeling weighed down rather than nourished.

For this reason I decided to make a healthier, lighter version. A version that leans on simple ingredients like Greek yoghurt and flour for the dough, then dates, olive oil and cinnamon to recreate all the magic of the classic while bringing a new level of wholesomeness to the table.

These aren’t cinnamon rolls stripped of joy – they’re cinnamon rolls reimagined!

Why I love making these healthy cinnamon rolls:

One of the great pleasures of baking cinnamon rolls is the aroma that fills the kitchen: warm spice, soft dough, and the deep sweetness of caramelising filling. With this healthier twist, those aromas become even more pronounced.

The tang of the yoghurt dough enhances the spice, giving cinnamon a brighter, more vibrant expression. Meanwhile, the date filling brings hints of dried fruit, caramel, and toffee. As the rolls bake, the filling bubbles slightly, seeping into the dough and infusing every layer with flavour.

The end result is a cinnamon roll that smells just as indulgent – but tastes more balanced. Each bite is warm, comforting, and sweet in a naturally satisfying way.

To make these healthy cinnamon rolls even more nourishing, you always have the option of using a higher fibre flour, like wholemeal spelt flour.

Why I use Greek yoghurt in the dough of these healthy cinnamon rolls:

Most traditional cinnamon rolls rely on enriched doughs made with butter, milk, and sometimes quite a bit of sugar. They’re delicious, but also heavier than what I want from an everyday treat.

Using Greek yoghurt and flour to form the dough offers a great alternative. The yoghurt provides moisture, tenderness, and a subtle tang that mimics the richness of a classic dough – without the need for added butter or sugar. The result is a soft, pillowy roll that feels decadent but sits more lightly on the palate.

Why this yoghurt-based dough works so well:

  • Moisture + Tenderness: Greek yoghurt has the right balance of protein and creaminess to give the dough structure while keeping it soft.

  • Natural Tang: That gentle tang brightens the flavour and balances the sweetness of the filling.

  • Simplicity: With fewer ingredients and a quicker process, the dough feels approachable and lighter – perfect for everyday baking. There’s no waiting around for the dough to rise.

Why I like to use dates to make the filling for these healthy cinnamon rolls:

The filling is where cinnamon rolls shine – and where sugar often overwhelms. But replacing refined sugar with a smooth blend of dates and olive oil is a game changer!

Dates bring a caramel-like sweetness that’s complex and rounded rather than sharp and sugary. When blended with a drizzle of olive oil, they transform into a rich, glossy spread that melts beautifully into the spirals of dough.

The magic of this filling lies in:

  • Natural Sweetness: Dates deliver sweetness along with fibre, minerals, and a flavour closer to toffee than to plain sugar.

  • Creamy Texture: Once blended with olive oil, they become a luscious paste that feels indulgent even with minimal added fat.

  • Warm Flavour Profile: The deep, earthy sweetness of dates pairs effortlessly with cinnamon, enhancing its warmth instead of competing with it.

  • Healthier Fat Choice: Olive oil adds silkiness and moisture while contributing heart-healthy fats and subtle fruity notes.

Together, they create a filling that feels both nostalgic and elevated, sweet but not cloying, wholesome but still dessert-worthy.

What you need to make these healthy cinnamon rolls:

Plain flour – You can substitute it with wholemeal spelt flour for an even healthier option.

Greek yoghurt – The yoghurt provides moisture, tenderness, and a subtle tang that mimics the richness of a classic dough – without the need for added fats or sugars. The result is a soft, pillowy roll that feels decadent but sits more lightly on the palate. I chose to use fat-free Greek yoghurt, but full fat will also work and will actually add even more richness to the dough.

Dates – I love using Palestinian Medjool dates as they have the best fudgy, soft texture and have just the right level of sweetness without being too sweet. Perfect for this healthy cinnamon rolls recipe.

Olive oil – The richness of the olive oil and its bitter notes go so well with dates – that’s the reason I chose to use it over butter. It’s also healthier with more heart healthy monounsaturated fats and antioxidants, so why not?

Spices – Cinnamon is the star of the show, of course, but I also like to add some cardamom as I think it goes so well with dates. This is completely optional and can simply be omitted if you don’t like it/don’t have it on hand.
